ROBOTIC SURGERY

The Interbalkan Medical Center has the famous Robotic Surgery System da Vinci R, which masterfully combines the doctor’s dexterity with robotic technology reinforced by the use of a PC. This robotic system, through digital analysis, provides highly accurate, 3-dimensional and zoomed imaging, a detailed sense of tissues, and becomes the doctors’ right hand. The orders they give through the machine’s levers are digitally transferred with a miraculous accuracy to its arms, which then conduct all the movements. It’s worth mentioning that the machine’s arms are 100% controlled by the surgeon. All surgeons conducting such operations are certified for the use of the robotic system.

Applications

The application of robotic surgery has proven revolutionary in cases such as:

  • General surgery (cholecystectomy, gastro-esophageal regurgitation, etc.)
  • Morbid obesity operations (gastric by-pass, ring, etc.)
  • Urology (prostatectomy, cystectomy, lymph node dissection, partial nephrectomy, etc.)
  • Gynecology (hysterectomy, removal of ovarian cysts, fibroids, fallopian tubes, ectopic pregnancies, etc.)
  • Pediatric surgery
  • Kidney transplant
  • Endocrine glands surgery

Advantages

  • A minimally invasive and traumatic technique, due to the accuracy of the doctors’ movements
  • Minimal blood loss
  • Causes much less pain than any other surgical method
  • Minimizes the likelihood of intra-operative and postoperative complications
  • Substantially reduces the patient’s hospitalization time
  • Ensures a faster recovery
  • Provides better aesthetic results
  • Provides solutions to the limitations of laparoscopy (2-dimensional imaging or unstable imaging, loss of movement freedom and sense, ergonomic problems for the entire surgical team)
  • Allows surgeon to have a 3-dimensional imaging of the surgical area, in great zoom
  • Ensures high accuracy on surgical movements, since the machine eradicates the physiological tremor of the doctor’s hands
  • Offers surgeons the opportunity to perform difficult surgical maneuvers, since the machine’s arms can perform all the moves of a human hand (7 degrees of freedom), with greatest skill and accuracy, and can also rotate for nearly 360ο within the surgical area
  • Provides surgeons with a greatest freedom and comfort, as opposed to conventional surgery, since with robotic surgery, the doctor can be seated during the operation and work in a carefully designed and ergonomically impeccable environment. This way the doctor is less tired, which subsequently leads to many advantages, especially in cases of delicate or long-hour surgeries.

Particularly impressive are the results of Robotic Surgery in:

  • Urology and especially in simple, partial or radical nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, ureteral lithotomy, ureteral nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, radical prostatectomy (with or without lymphadenectomy), radical cystectomy with lymphadenectomy and Bricker type urostomy or temperate orthotopic neocyst, treatment of varicocele, radical retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy and female pelvic floor fall
  • In low anterior resection of rectal cancer, it minimizes nerve lesions, protecting the erectile function
  • In cholecystectomy, it eliminates the likelihood of biliary tract lesions
  • During lymphadenectomy, it ensures a better surgical outcome
  • In the treatment of gastro-esophageal regurgitation, it minimized post-operational pain
  • In gynecology, with the radical hysterectomy in case of cervix cancer, it ensures the removal of many lymph nodes, substantially decreasing the chance of nerve injuries. Moreover it has much better results in the function of the bladder and the pelvic floor.
